Kitchener Documentary Family Photography || Three Generations

When Sarah said she wanted “no posing, no pressure — just us in our backyard,” I knew it was going to be good. And it was.

Their documentary family session in Kitchener unfolded exactly the way real life does — kids running under bright red fall trees, grandparents scooping up grandbabies, Johnny tossing the boys in the air, and Sarah soaking it all in. Nothing stiff. Nothing overly directed. Just their people, together.

Caius and Frankie ran through the leaves like they’d been waiting all year for this exact moment. Sunday stayed close when she needed to, then joined the chaos when she felt ready. There were piggyback rides. Leaf throwing. A few snack negotiations. Lots of laughter.
As a Kitchener documentary family photographer, this is always my goal — to capture what it actually feels like to be in this season of parenting.

Not perfect. But real.

One of the most meaningful parts of this session was including extended family. Grandparents standing proudly with their kids and grandkids. Quiet hugs. Generational portraits under that fall tree. Those are the images that grow in value every single year. These are the photos your children will treasure one day — not just because of how everyone looked, but because of who was there.

Three generations. One backyard. A whole lot of special memories wrapped up in a single evening. You don’t need a styled location or a perfectly curated space. Your backyard is where your kids feel free. It’s where memories already live. And that comfort allows everyone to relax — which is exactly when the most meaningful images happen.
